Rose and Fish - St. Valentine's Day

I've always loved Valentine's Day.... because romance comes in all shades and colors and shapes -- not just pink and red hearts.  Pink and Red Hearts  There's the romance of mountains, lonely landscapes, adventures, and lost causes.  There's the romance of snug homes, fires on the hearth, and cups of tea.  There's the romance of lace and the romance of swords.  I can appreciate both!

At Chesterton Press, I am rejoicing this February that at long last, I can put all my various projects together on one snug little website ... well, at least that's how I think of it.  :)   So I'm writing to you from the warmth of Virginia's mild winter landscape about some of the books we carry at our little publishing company that will help you celebrate the romance in your life.

Waking Rose - a fairy tale retoldIf you ask me to name the most romantic book I've ever written, I think I'd have to say Waking Rose.  My tribute to unrequited love, as I used to call it, probably still pulls at my heartstrings the most.

Speaking of true love, I'd like to mention some books that focus on REAL ROMANCE - romance that leads to happy, life-long marriages.  To that end, I want to showcase the two non-fiction books we carry.

Come My Beloved + Our Fairy Tale RomanceCome My Beloved is a collection of inspiring stories of Catholic courtship, including an atheistic girl who falls in love with a Catholic Prince Charming; a couple who met through a Christian introduction service; a sailor who prayed a novena to find the right girl--and how he found her! It also includes the story of a writer of fairy tales who met the perfect fiction editor and married him so he wouldn't get away-- that is, it contains my story as well. My husband tells a longer version of our story in Our Fairy Tale Romance,  but the Come My Beloved version has both our viewpoints!  If you haven't yet heard the story of how we met and fell in love (with the help of a fairy tale novel I was writing at the time!), consider checking out this book.

If you or someone you know needs some real-life inspiration towards discerning a marriage vocation, I recommend either of these books as wonderful St. Valentine Day gifts. Or both!  You can buy them both by February 14 for only $14.

I mentioned that romance can be found in lost causes and lonely landscapes.  If your tastes run more towards that kind of romance, and you have a bent for literary fiction, I invite you to take a look at a new novel I edited for Sophia Institute Press's adult fiction line: Christopher.

Christopher is about the romance of a young man with God and three girls.  Christopher sees the grandeur of God in the vast Minnesota sky, and in its cold lakes and dark forests. When a homeschooled Catholic girl introduces him to the Eucharist, Christopher falls in love with the mystery of the Church, but lacks sufficient faith to convert. Struggling with his flesh yet drawn by beauty, Christopher embarks on a knight's quest to find the truth. Haunting, poetic writing. Living faith.

The president of the American Chesterton Society, Dale Alquist writes:  "Dreamy, funny, and profound, with lovable, living characters that immediately invite you into their story.  David Athey has written another marvel."

The Spanish Match - A Novel of Catholic SpainAnd for those who have a taste for lost causes, join the bittersweet adventure of The Spanish Match.  This novel, based on true incidents,  is set in 1623 Catholic Spain.  Protestant England, ruled by a profane and worldly monarch, is her bitter enemy.  And yet, Charles, heir to the throne of England, dons a disguise, crosses the Channel, rides horseback across France and sneaks into Spain.  His mission?  To woo the lovely and devout Maria, sister of the King of Spain, and accomplish by marriage what decades of war have failed to do: reconcile the two embittered nations. One of the great but little-known "what ifs" of history comes to life in this poignant but riveting novel as the irreligious Charles encounters the living Catholic faith for the first time, and is forced to make a choice that may affect the lives of millions of people.

Both Christopher and The Spanish Match contain themes and scenes better suited to mature adult readers, not young teens. I hope adults will find them thoughtful and entertaining novels that explore sensitive issues in history and sexuality from a deeply Catholic perspective.

I'll end with a quote by our inspiration, G.K. Chesterton“To love means loving the unlovable. To forgive means pardoning the unpardonable. Faith means believing the unbelievable. Hope means hoping when everything seems hopeless.”

May God bless you and your family, and Happy Valentine's Day!
